READING and LANGUAGE ARTS:
There are several components to second grade reading; whole class instruction using Journeys Common Core, Phonics and Spelling, Daily 5, Independent Reading Logs, Writing Workshop, and small guided reading groups.
The primary goal of the Journeys reading program is to develop children's ability to comprehend texts of varied genres. Children will be reading both fiction and informational texts. Phonics, decoding, and word analysis skills are a part of regular instruction and are supported with practice in the students Readers Notebook. Students will be sharing their stories along with practice in spelling and phonics. Assessment in vocabulary, phonics/spelling, and comprehension will occur with each story. Additionally, a family connection newsletter will be sent home to summarize the story genre with additional optional ideas to incorporate at home.
Writing workshop is the writing process that moves a story that your child authors from rough draft to publishing. Parent volunteers are welcome in this area as we grow in becoming better writers. Writing workshop is generally from 10:05 a.m. until lunch at 11:00 a.m. This will be discussed in greater detail at Back to School Night.
Small guided reading groups are another component to reading. During the first several weeks of school each child will individually read to me using the Fountas and Pinnell screening assessment. This screening tool identifies an instructional level in reading used to break children of similar ability into groups of 4-6 students. A book envelope will come home for your child to share their books and these books may also be used for reading logs. These levels, along with tips to increase reading fluency will be shared at our first parent conference in the fall.
Our wonderful Reading Dog program will begin in September. These trained therapy dogs are a wonderful way to increase fluency and have fun with reading! A permission slip will be sent home along with more details at a later date. This will be our sixth year with our wonderful handlers and their dogs Bella, Coco, Baxter, and Diamond. They even have a Sacred Heart uniform and make our Mondays extra special!
Independent reading logs will begin in September with a minimum of 60 minutes read each week. A folder that includes a Reading log will be sent home towards the end of September and this folder will be due each Thursday. Details will be shared at Back to School Night.

Why It Is Important To Read Daily:
WRITING WORKSHOP:
Sometimes your Communication Folder will contain your child's published stories. Feel free to write a note of encouragement in their copybook. These stories are the result of following the writing process, which includes a rough draft, editing, revising, and publishing. Please contact me at [email protected] if you wish to volunteer.
